All great things have small beginnings. Take an Oak tree for example; it grows to a height of 30 or 40 feet and may have a circumference of more than 15 feet. As huge and majestic as this tree may become, it began from a tiny acorn.
In this series of articles we will learn how addictions begin on a small level, beginning with the casual acquaintance. All human relationships begin as casual acquaintances. Whenever we speak of a person as an acquaintance, we are often referring to someone who is casually known—that is—we know of them, and little if anything about them.
In like manner, those addicted to drugs form personal relationships with their drug of choice. It all begins with association. Being associated with someone who is a user can lead one to become acquainted with the drug that the associate is using. Once you have become well acquainted with the drug of your choice there is a one hundred percent possibility of beginning a relationship as a drug addict.
Most Americans, as a means of justifying our dependence on a certain drug, relate to drugs by placing them in one of two categories: legal and illegal drugs. If it is prescribed by a doctor it is okay for us to become dependent. But drugs, whether legal or illegal, are dangerous if misused or abused, and being legal does not make them any less dangerous. However, it is mostly illegal drugs that attract the attention of those looking for a quick high.
Legal drugs are diagnosed primarily in the treatment of sickness and disease, but there are many people who take drugs purely for their narcotic effect. When the only motive for taking a drug is for the thrill that the narcotic offers, then as impossible as it may seem at the time, addiction is inevitable and is just around the corner. Limit your consumption of prescribed drugs, and remember, you could be next in line as a statistic in drug abuse.
